Hans will be imparting the foundation of his teachings and will explain why he asks you to do something in particular in your lesson. Hans has amassed a wealth of knowledge over the years about the bio-mechanics of the horse and rider and how they work together and so much more. He has a lot to share with us to help us improve our riding and our relationship with our horse(s) (or the horse(s) we ride).

Hans is a classical dressage coach with over 20 years of experience. He combines German riding principles with French traditional training of "legerete" as well as the principles of bio-mechanics in his teaching. He also teaches jumping - after all - "it is simply dressage with obstacles".

Why is riding based on Bio-mechanics important?
There are many kinds of training methods in the riding world. Currently, hyper-flexion training and lightness training based on bio-mechanics are common topics among all equestrians, especially dressage riders. Bio-mechanics apply to all living creatures and are based on universal principles in which an exercise, technique or rule should follow. This ensures that the technique is researched and will lead to correct results. Although training horse’s based on bio-mechanics seems like a logical idea to most people, many of the world’s top-scoring performance horses are trained in hyper-flexion causing some people to question the classical method of training.
In my opinion, riding is an art as well as a sport and riders need to take the time to learn about bio-mechanics of both the horse and rider before subjecting their horse any training methods. When a top athlete is getting into a sport or training for an event they don’t just get up and go. They study their body and train/cross-train according to their bio-mechanics and their own personal strengths/weaknesses. Classical riding is based on total respect for the horse and excludes the use of force and artificial aids. This system uses clear, effective and light aids from the seat, legs and hands to allow the horse to perform the movements for the rider instead of the rider manipulating the horse to perform movements. In essence, the rider puts the horse in a position where it wants to perform the desired movement and this is easily accomplished when the trainer understands the bio-mechanics, balance, physiology, etc. of both the horse and rider.
I have trained in many different methods with many different coaches and no one could seem to explain the logic or application of a technique or method. I have only trained with Hans for a short period of time and I can easily say my riding has improved tremendously and my horse is more supple, relaxed and willing than ever before. Every exercise is explained in detail, makes complete sense, and WORKS. One of the things I love most about this system is that not every exercise is applied in the same sequence or even at all to every horse. Each horse is treated as an individual and is never placed in a ‘cookie-cutter’ training schedule. It’s hard to explain a whole training system in a few paragraphs but if you try this style of riding you will not be disappointed. For me personally I know I will never train in another style again.

“[Classical riding] is a rational choice. By analyzing all the principal Masters through reliable criteria such as anatomy, physiology, balance, motion, ethology etc., I concluded that a synthesis of the best from La Guerinière, Baucher and L’Hotte enables the most natural (soft and effective) way to school and teach. In other words: clever and respectful towards the horse. What else can be really CLASSICAL?”
